Bamboo vs Cotton Sheets: Feel, Cooling, Durability

Cotton is a fiber picked from a plant. Bamboo sheets are a fiber made in a factory from a plant. That difference explains most of what you feel, and all of what the label is allowed to say.

The verdict

Which to buy.

Buy cotton percale if you sleep hot or want sheets that take years of hot washes without complaint. Buy bamboo viscose if you want the smooth, heavy, cool drape and will wash cold and dry low. For the drape on a budget, Cariloha's bamboo viscose at about $119 undercuts both.

Bamboo or cotton sheets, and what bamboo sheets actually are

Start with what is in the bag. Cotton sheets are spun from cotton fiber, and the good ones use long staple cotton woven as percale or sateen. Bamboo sheets are almost never bamboo fiber. The stalk is pulped, the cellulose is dissolved in chemicals and pushed through a spinneret into new filament, and that filament is viscose rayon, or, by a cleaner solvent route, lyocell. The Federal Trade Commission is plain about it: a textile can be called bamboo only if it is made directly from bamboo fiber, and the rayon kind must be labeled rayon or viscose made from bamboo. It has sent warning letters to retailers and collected civil penalties over the word.

That is not a reason to avoid them. Viscose from bamboo is a silky, drapey, cool-to-the-touch cloth that many people prefer to cotton on first touch, and lyocell is the same idea with a better process. It is a reason to buy by the fiber named on the label rather than by the plant in the marketing. To compare like with like, the two sheets set side by side here are Brooklinen's Classic Percale, a 270 thread count long staple cotton, and Cozy Earth's Bamboo Sheet Set, 100% viscose from bamboo, both sold on Amazon by the maker. Three further sets show a cheaper bamboo viscose, a eucalyptus lyocell, and cotton woven as sateen.

The short version: cotton percale for anyone who sleeps hot and wants sheets that last, bamboo viscose for anyone who wants a smooth, cool, heavy drape and is prepared to wash it gently, and lyocell if you want that drape with a cleaner manufacturing story.

How we chose

  1. What the fiber is. Cotton staple, viscose rayon from bamboo pulp, or lyocell, and what each process does to the cloth.
  2. Feel and temperature. Crisp or silky, and which actually sleeps cooler over a night.
  3. Wear and care. Pilling, wrinkling, and how much the washing machine is allowed to do.
  4. Sold properly. Every pick is sold on Amazon by the brand itself.

ALong staple cotton percale

Brooklinen

Brooklinen Percale 4-Pc Sheet Set for Hot Sleepers, Luxury - Queen, White

A sound long staple cotton percale: crisp, cool, matte, and tougher in the wash than any regenerated fiber.

Brooklinen's Classic Percale is 100% long staple cotton in a 270 thread count plain weave, certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100. The queen set is a flat sheet, a fitted sheet and two pillowcases. Brooklinen sells it to people who run warm, and that is the right audience. A plain weave of cotton staple breathes well and wicks moisture, and the Sleep Foundation names cotton percale its choice for hot sleepers for exactly those reasons.

Cotton is a staple fiber: short lengths spun into yarn, which is why percale feels faintly textured rather than slippery. The long staple grade here means fewer fiber ends on the surface, so it softens with washing instead of fuzzing. It takes a warm wash and a proper dryer, which no bamboo viscose here does.

Skip it if you want a bed that feels smooth and heavy the first night. Percale is crisp when new and wrinkles freely. That is the trade for the cooling and the long life.

The catch. Crisp and a little rough when new, and it wrinkles more than any other set here.

BViscose from bamboo

Cozy Earth

Cozy Earth Luxury Bed Sheet Set, 100% Viscose from Bamboo, 4-Piece Queen Sheet Set, White

The best known bamboo sheet, labeled correctly as 100% viscose from bamboo: silky, heavy, cool on contact, and priced like fine cotton.

Cozy Earth

Cozy Earth's set is 100% viscose from bamboo, which is the label the FTC requires and the one Cozy Earth uses. The queen set is a flat sheet, a fitted sheet and two pillowcases, cut generously, with a fitted sheet that fits mattresses up to 20 inches deep. The cloth is what people mean when they say bamboo sheets: smooth and slippery, with a heavy drape that settles over the body, and cool against the skin when you first get in.

Viscose is a regenerated cellulose, so it behaves differently from cotton in the wash. It is weaker wet, which is why Cozy Earth says to wash cold with a gentle detergent, skip softener and bleach, shake out wrinkles between washer and dryer, and pull the sheets while still slightly damp. Cozy Earth backs the set with a 10 year warranty against pilling, abnormal rips and tears, and workmanship defects, and a 100 night trial, which is unusual for a sheet and worth something at this price.

Skip it if you sleep hot and expect it to be cooler than cotton all night. The Sleep Foundation reports that many sleepers find bamboo does not sleep as cool as cotton despite the cool first touch. Skip it too if your laundry habit is hot water and a high dryer.

The catch. The most expensive set here, and viscose asks for gentler laundry than cotton.

Cariloha

Cariloha Aloha Soft Bamboo Viscose Sheet Set, Natural, Queen

The same fiber as Cozy Earth for a bit more than a third of the price, from a bamboo bedding specialist, OEKO-TEX certified.

Cariloha

Cariloha has sold bamboo viscose bedding and towels for years, and Aloha Soft is its entry line, originally made for Costco. The set is 100% viscose from bamboo, a flat sheet, a fitted sheet with 16 inch pockets and two pillowcases, certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100. It has the smooth, cool, drapey hand that defines the category.

The maker's claim that it is softer than 1,000 thread count Egyptian cotton is marketing and not a measurement, and thread count does not transfer between a spun cotton and a filament viscose in any case. What is true is that at about $119 it is the cheapest route here to the bamboo feel from a brand that sells it on Amazon itself.

Skip it if you want white: this listing is the Natural color, and the line's colors change. Wash cold, dry low, no bleach or softener, same as any viscose.

The catch. A thinner, lighter cloth than Cozy Earth's, and the color sold here is Natural rather than white.

Also 02The lyocell alternative

Buffy

Buffy 100% Eucalyptus Lyocell Sheet Set, 4 Piece Set with 15 in Deep Pockets, Cream, Queen

The bamboo feel by the cleaner process: Tencel lyocell from eucalyptus, with the solvent recovered rather than dumped.

Lyocell is the other regenerated cellulose. Where viscose dissolves pulp with carbon disulfide, lyocell dissolves it in an amine oxide solvent that is recovered and reused, about 99% of it according to the process literature. The cloth it makes is silky, cool to the touch and drapey, much like bamboo viscose, and it is generally stronger when wet. Tencel is Lenzing's branded lyocell, here made from Austrian eucalyptus.

Buffy's set is 100% Tencel lyocell: a fitted sheet with a 15 inch pocket and four extra corner bands, a flat sheet and two pillowcases, dyed with plant based dyes and OEKO-TEX tested. It is machine washable and dryable, and Buffy says it is made for everyday use. If you like what bamboo sheets feel like but not what the viscose process involves, this is the answer, and ettitude makes the same thing from bamboo pulp at a higher price.

Skip it if you want white. Buffy's plant dyes run to soft colors and the palette changes. Lyocell also clings and wrinkles more than sateen cotton.

The catch. Lyocell clings and wrinkles more than cotton, and plant dyed colors may soften over many washes.

Brooklinen

Brooklinen Luxe Sateen Sheet Set Hotel-Quality Luxury - Queen, White

Most people who want bamboo sheets want them for the smooth, soft, slightly glossy hand. Cotton can do that too, by weaving it as sateen, where each thread floats over several before going under one. Brooklinen's Luxe Sateen is the same long staple cotton as its percale, woven as a 480 thread count sateen, certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, and made in Portugal according to Brooklinen's site. It is soft from the first night, warmer than percale, and drapes and wrinkles less.

Against bamboo viscose it is a little less slippery, a little warmer to the touch, and a good deal easier to live with in the laundry, since it is still cotton. The fitted sheet goes to 16 inches.

Skip it if you sleep hot. Sateen holds more warmth than percale, and the floats that make it smooth pill sooner. Wash cold, dry low and skip the softener.

The catch. Warmer than percale, and the surface pills and wears sooner.

More head to heads.

Every comparison

Viscose, rayon, lyocell, modal: the words

Rayon and viscose are the same thing: cellulose from wood or bamboo pulp, dissolved and spun back into fiber. The viscose process uses sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide, and the wastewater is the environmental complaint against it. Lyocell dissolves the pulp directly in an amine oxide solvent, almost all of which is recovered and reused, and does not use carbon disulfide. Modal is a stronger variant of viscose, usually from beech. Tencel is Lenzing's brand name for its lyocell and modal. All four can be made from bamboo pulp, and the finished fiber tells you nothing about which plant it came from.

Bamboo linen, made mechanically from the stalk's own fiber like flax linen, is the only cloth the FTC lets a seller call bamboo without qualification. It is coarse, rare and almost never what a sheet set means.

Reading a bamboo listing

Look for the generic fiber name: viscose from bamboo, rayon from bamboo, or lyocell from bamboo. A listing that says only bamboo, or organic bamboo, is either hiding the fiber or has not read the rule. Organic refers to how the bamboo was grown, not to the chemistry that turned it into cloth, and the GOTS organic standard covers natural fibers such as cotton, not viscose spun from bamboo pulp. The certification to look for on viscose and lyocell is OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which tests the finished cloth for harmful substances.

Thread count claims on bamboo sheets are not comparable to cotton. Viscose is a continuous filament, and the softer-than-1,000-count lines are marketing.

Washing regenerated fibers

Viscose loses a good deal of its strength when wet, which is why every maker here says cold water, gentle detergent, no bleach, no fabric softener, and a low dryer. Overload the machine and the sheets abrade against each other. Pull them from the dryer slightly damp and make the bed; the wrinkles fall out on their own. Cotton percale forgives all of this. That is the practical difference between the two fibers once the first week's novelty has worn off.

Frequently asked questions

Are bamboo sheets really made of bamboo?

Rarely. Nearly all are viscose rayon or lyocell regenerated from bamboo pulp. The FTC says a textile can be called bamboo only if it is made directly from bamboo fiber; the rest must be labeled rayon or viscose made from bamboo.

Are bamboo sheets cooler than cotton?

They feel cooler on first touch because the smooth filament pulls heat from the skin. Over a night, the Sleep Foundation reports many sleepers find cotton, especially percale, breathes better and sleeps cooler. For a hot sleeper, choose cotton percale.

Which lasts longer, bamboo or cotton sheets?

Cotton percale, in ordinary laundry. Viscose is weaker wet and pills if washed hot or with softener. Washed cold and dried low, good bamboo viscose lasts years, and Cozy Earth warrants its set against pilling for 10 years.

Do bamboo sheets wrinkle?

Less than cotton percale, and about the same as cotton sateen. The heavy drape hides creases, and makers suggest making the bed while the sheets are slightly damp.

What is the difference between bamboo viscose and bamboo lyocell?

The solvent. Viscose uses carbon disulfide and sodium hydroxide; lyocell uses an amine oxide that is almost entirely recovered and reused. Lyocell is generally stronger wet. The feel is similar.

Are bamboo sheets good for hot sleepers on a budget?

For the bamboo feel on a budget, Cariloha's Aloha Soft at about $119 is the pick here. For actual cooling on a budget, a cotton percale is the safer choice.
