Sheets for Hot Sleepers: Percale, Linen and Tencel

If you wake up warm, the sheet is doing half the damage. Choose a weave that breathes and a fiber that moves damp away from the skin, and skip anything sold on thread count.

The sheets for hot sleepers

A hot sleeper has two problems, and they need different answers. One is heat: the bed traps it, and the sheet either lets it out or holds it against you. The other is damp. Night sweats leave the fabric wet, and a wet sheet feels clammy long after the heat has passed. The right sheet deals with both.

Weave decides the first problem. Percale is a plain, one over one under weave that leaves tiny gaps for air, which is why it feels crisp and cool the moment you get in. Sateen floats more yarn on the surface for a smooth, heavier drape, and it sleeps noticeably warmer. Linen is looser still, and its thick, uneven yarns keep the fabric from lying flat against the skin.

Fiber decides the second. Cotton breathes well but holds on to moisture once it is wet. Linen absorbs a good deal and dries quickly. Lyocell, sold under the Tencel name, is a fiber spun from eucalyptus wood pulp; it feels cool and silky and is known for wicking moisture away from the body. That is the case for each of the five sets below, from about $60 to about $250 for a queen.

How we chose

  1. A weave that breathes. Percale, linen or a light lyocell. Heavy sateens and brushed cottons were left out.
  2. How it handles damp. Whether the fiber absorbs and releases sweat, or just holds it. This matters most for night sweats.
  3. Weight. Lighter fabric traps less heat. Where the maker publishes a weight in grams per square meter, we note it.
  4. Plain facts on the listing. Fiber content, certifications and what is in the set, stated by the maker, not implied.

We read makers’ specifications, warranties, care instructions and the sources listed at the end. We do not accept paid placements. How we choose

The 5 picks, in detail

Brooklinen Classic Percale Core Sheet Set

Best overallNo. 1

Brooklinen Classic Percale Core Sheet Set

Our take. Crisp long staple percale at 270 threads, the hotel feel that most hot sleepers are after.

Made in
India
Keeps for
Several years of weekly washing
Fiber
100% long staple cotton
Weave
Percale
Thread count
270
Set
Fitted sheet, flat sheet, 2 pillowcases
Certification
OEKO-TEX

For most people who sleep warm, a good percale solves the problem, and Brooklinen's Classic is a good percale. It is 100% long staple cotton at 270 thread count, a deliberately modest number that keeps the weave open and airy. Long staple fiber spins into smoother, stronger yarn, so it softens with washing instead of pilling.

The Core set has a fitted sheet, a flat sheet and two pillowcases, and it is OEKO-TEX certified. Brooklinen sells it as a sheet for hot sleepers, and the Sleep Foundation includes it among its cooling picks.

Skip it if your trouble is sweat rather than heat. Cotton breathes, but once it is wet it stays wet for a while; the lyocell or linen sets deal with damp better.

The catch. Percale wrinkles, and it feels a little rough for the first few washes.

Threadmill 100% Organic Cotton Sheets for Queen Size Bed, GOTS Certified Percale, 4 Piece Set

The entry pointNo. 2

Threadmill 100% Organic Cotton Sheets for Queen Size Bed, GOTS Certified Percale, 4 Piece Set

Our take. Plain organic cotton percale at a price that lets you try the weave before spending more.

Keeps for
A few years of regular washing
Fiber
100% organic cotton, GOTS certified
Weave
Percale
Set
Fitted sheet, flat sheet, 2 pillowcases
Care
Machine wash, tumble dry low

If you have been sleeping on sateen or a microfiber set and waking up warm, the cheapest useful change is a cotton percale. Threadmill's organic set is GOTS certified cotton in a percale weave, with a fitted sheet, a flat sheet and two pillowcases, and it costs about what a single good pillowcase costs elsewhere.

The maker's care advice is sensible: gentle detergent, a low dryer, and take the sheets out promptly to limit wrinkling. Percale softens with washing, so expect it to feel crisper on the first night than the tenth.

Skip it if you want to know exactly what you are buying. The listing gives no thread count, staple length or country of manufacture, which is why it sits at the entry point rather than in the middle.

The catch. Thread count, staple length and origin are not stated on the listing.

Sijo AiryWeight Tencel Sheet Set, 100% Lyocell Derived from Eucalyptus, 3pc, Snow, Queen

For night sweats, without a top sheetNo. 3

Sijo AiryWeight Tencel Sheet Set, 100% Lyocell Derived from Eucalyptus, 3pc, Snow, Queen

Our take. Light, silky lyocell that pulls damp off the skin, sold as a fitted sheet and two pillowcases.

Keeps for
Several years; wash cool and dry low
Fiber
100% Tencel lyocell from eucalyptus
Weight
130 GSM
Set
Fitted sheet (16 in pocket), 2 pillowcases; no flat sheet
Certification
OEKO-TEX
Moisture
Absorbs 70% more than cotton (maker's figure)

Sijo's AiryWeight set is 100% Tencel lyocell made from eucalyptus grown in Austria, woven light at 130 grams per square meter. Lyocell is cool to the touch and slippery rather than crisp, and Sijo says the fabric absorbs 70% more moisture than cotton and releases it quickly. For someone who wakes damp rather than simply warm, that is the property that matters.

Note what is in the box: one fitted sheet with a 16 inch pocket and two pillowcases, no flat sheet. Many hot sleepers drop the top sheet anyway and sleep under a light duvet cover, so this suits them. If you want a flat sheet, it is sold separately.

The set is OEKO-TEX certified and free of bleach and dyes, per the maker. Skip it if you love the crisp, papery feel of percale. Lyocell drapes and clings a little, and some people find that feels warmer, not cooler.

The catch. No flat sheet in this set, and lyocell wrinkles and shows water marks until it is dry.

Buffy 100% Eucalyptus Lyocell Sheet Set, 4 Piece Set with 15 in Deep Pockets, Cream, Queen

The full lyocell setNo. 4

Buffy 100% Eucalyptus Lyocell Sheet Set, 4 Piece Set with 15 in Deep Pockets, Cream, Queen

Our take. A complete four piece lyocell set, cool and silky, dyed with plant-based dyes.

Keeps for
Several years; wash cool and dry low
Fiber
100% Tencel lyocell from eucalyptus
Set
Fitted sheet, flat sheet, 2 pillowcases
Pocket
15 in, with 4 extra corner bands
Dye
Plant-based dyes
Care
Machine wash and dry

Buffy built its name on eucalyptus bedding, and this set is 100% Tencel lyocell from Austrian eucalyptus: a fitted sheet, a flat sheet and two pillowcases. It feels cool and smooth to the touch, with the soft sheen lyocell always has, and it is the obvious choice for a hot sleeper who wants the full set rather than Sijo's three pieces.

The fitted sheet has a 15 inch pocket and comes with four extra elastic corner bands to hold it on the mattress, a small detail that matters with a slippery fabric. The maker says the set is dyed only with plant-based dyes and tested by OEKO-TEX, and it is machine washable and dryable.

Skip it if you want white. Buffy's plant dyes run to soft colors such as cream and pink, and the palette changes. It is also twice the price of Sijo's lyocell for, mostly, a flat sheet and a brand.

The catch. Lyocell clings and wrinkles more than cotton, and plant-dyed colors may soften over many washes.

Sijo Stone Washed Organic French Linen Bed Sheet Set, GOTS Certified Organic, 4 Piece (Snow, Queen)

For humid summersNo. 5

Sijo Stone Washed Organic French Linen Bed Sheet Set, GOTS Certified Organic, 4 Piece (Snow, Queen)

Our take. Stone washed French linen, the coolest bed in a humid summer and the longest lasting set here.

Keeps for
Many years; linen outlasts cotton with sensible care
Fiber
100% organic French linen, GOTS certified
Weight
175 GSM
Finish
Stone washed, preshrunk
Set
Fitted sheet (16 in pocket), flat sheet, 2 pillowcases
Care
Machine wash cold, tumble dry low

Linen is flax, and its thick, irregular yarns hold the fabric slightly off the skin, which is why a linen bed feels airy even on a close night. It absorbs moisture well and dries quickly. Sijo's set is GOTS certified organic flax from Normandy, stone washed so it is soft from the start.

At 175 grams per square meter it is a sturdy linen, which is good for its lifespan and a little warmer than the lightest linens. The set is complete, with a fitted sheet for mattresses up to 16 inches, a flat sheet and two pillowcases. Wash cool, rinse well, and dry low.

Skip it if you want smooth sheets. Linen is textured, wrinkles on sight and can feel slightly rough to people used to sateen. It is also the most expensive set here.

The catch. Always rumpled, and a heavier linen than the airiest summer weights.

Compared.

Every comparison

Heat or sweat: which is yours?

If you get into bed and feel warm, but wake up dry, the answer is weave. Move to a cotton percale or a linen, and away from sateen, flannel and microfiber.

If you wake up damp, fiber matters more than weave. Lyocell and linen both handle moisture better than cotton. Keep a second set so one is always clean and dry.

Why thread count works against you

A higher thread count packs more yarn into each square inch, and a denser fabric breathes less. For a hot sleeper, a percale between about 200 and 400 is the sweet spot. Numbers in the high hundreds usually come from thin, twisted multi ply yarns counted separately, which make a heavier, warmer sheet, not a better one.

The rest of the bed

Sheets are one layer. A dense memory foam topper or a heavy down comforter will undo a good percale. Pair cool sheets with a light duvet or a cotton blanket, and consider dropping the top sheet in summer.

Caring for lyocell and linen

Wash both cool with a mild detergent, skip fabric softener, which coats the fibers and reduces absorbency, and dry on low. Pull lyocell out of the dryer promptly to limit creasing. Linen will wrinkle whatever you do; that is part of it.

Frequently asked questions

What sheets are best for hot sleepers?

Cotton percale for people who run warm, and linen or Tencel lyocell for people who sweat at night. Avoid sateen, flannel, microfiber and very high thread counts.

Is percale or sateen cooler?

Percale. Its one over one under weave is more open and breathes better. Sateen floats more yarn on the surface, which makes it smoother, heavier and warmer.

Are Tencel sheets good for night sweats?

They are a strong choice. Lyocell absorbs moisture and releases it quickly, so the sheet feels less clammy than wet cotton. Sijo says its lyocell absorbs 70% more moisture than cotton.

Is linen or Tencel cooler?

Both sleep cool. Linen feels airy and textured, and it lasts longer. Lyocell feels smooth and silky, and it is usually less expensive. Choose by the texture you prefer.

What thread count is best for hot sleepers?

For percale, roughly 200 to 400. Higher counts make a denser, warmer fabric, and very high counts usually rely on multi ply yarn.
