Le Creuset vs Caraway Dutch Oven: Which to Buy

They look alike on the stove and are built from entirely different things. One is cast iron under enamel and will outlast you. The other is aluminum under a nonstick coat and weighs about half as much.

The verdict

Which to buy.

Buy the Le Creuset if you want a Dutch oven for searing, braising and bread at high heat that will last for decades. Buy the Caraway if you want a light, easy-to-clean pot for soups, pasta and gentle stews, and accept that its coating will wear out.

Le Creuset vs Caraway: two very different Dutch ovens

Le Creuset has cast its enameled iron pots in northern France since 1925. Caraway is a younger New York company best known for colorful ceramic nonstick pans. Both sell a lidded Dutch oven in similar colors, both say their cooking surfaces are free of PTFE and PFAS, and that is where the resemblance stops.

The Le Creuset 5.5 quart is cast iron coated in glossy enamel, about 11 pounds with its lid, rated for the oven to 500 degrees Fahrenheit and covered by a limited lifetime warranty. The Caraway 6.5 quart is an aluminum pot with a ceramic nonstick coating, about 6 pounds by the maker's figure, rated to 550 degrees, and covered for one year. Caraway asks for low to medium heat; cast iron is at its best when it is properly hot.

So the question is less which brand is better than which kind of pot you need. Below are the two head to head, then three alternatives: Caraway's own enameled cast iron, a larger Le Creuset for less money, and a Lodge for under $100.

How we chose

  1. Material and what it does. Cast iron stores heat and browns; thin aluminum heats quickly and evenly but stores less. The coating decides how hot you can go.
  2. Weight. Le Creuset's weight is America's Test Kitchen's measurement; Caraway's is the maker's.
  3. Limits and care. Oven ratings, heat guidance and dishwasher rules from the listings and makers' pages.
  4. Warranty and lifespan. What each maker covers, and how long each surface realistically lasts.

We read makers’ specifications, warranties, care instructions and the sources listed at the end. We do not accept paid placements. How we choose

ALe Creuset: the pot for decades

Le Creuset

Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron Round Dutch Oven, 5.5 qt., Marseille

Heavy French enameled cast iron that sears, braises and bakes bread, and will still be working in forty years.

The 5.5 quart round is the size America's Test Kitchen named its winner in the 5 to 6 quart class. It is cast iron coated in enamel inside and out, with a pale sand interior that lets you watch the fond brown and a lid built to return moisture to the food. The listing rates it for every cooktop, the oven to 500 degrees Fahrenheit and the dishwasher.

Cast iron is the reason to choose it. It holds heat, so a pot of short ribs browns properly and a braise stays at an even simmer for hours in a low oven. It is the pot for no-knead bread at 450 degrees. Nothing wears away with use, and Le Creuset's limited lifetime warranty backs it.

Skip it if you cannot comfortably lift about 11 pounds, more when full. And it is not nonstick: eggs and rice stick to enamel without fat, and the pale interior stains over the years.

The catch. Heavy, expensive, and the warranty excludes damage from thermal shock and overheating.

BCaraway: the light nonstick pot

Caraway

Caraway Non-Stick Ceramic Dutch Oven Pot with Lid (6.5 qt, 10.5")

A light, slick, easy-to-wash pot for soups and pasta, at well under half the price, with a coating that will not last like enamel.

Caraway's Dutch oven is an aluminum pot with a ceramic nonstick coating, 10.5 inches across, 6.5 quarts and about 6 pounds by the maker's figure. The listing, sold by Caraway Home, says the coating is free of PTFE, PFOA, PFAS, lead and cadmium, that it works on every cooktop including induction and that it is oven safe to 550 degrees Fahrenheit.

Its strengths are weight and cleanup. At about half the weight of the Le Creuset it is easy to lift and pour, and a pot of chili or oatmeal wipes out with a sponge. A full quart more capacity helps with pasta and stock.

The limits come from the coating. Caraway asks for low to medium heat, a little oil or butter and gentle tools, and recommends hand washing. Ceramic nonstick loses its release with time and heat, and Caraway's warranty is one year and excludes coating wear. Skip it if you want to sear hard or bake bread often, or if you want a pot to hand down.

The catch. The ceramic coating wears out, high heat speeds that up, and the warranty is a single year.

Caraway Enameled Cast Iron Oval Dutch Oven

Caraway's answer to Le Creuset: enameled cast iron in its colors, larger and cheaper, with a much shorter track record.

If you like Caraway's look but want a pot that sears and braises like the French classics, Caraway now makes enameled cast iron too. This oval holds 8 quarts, has a three-layer enamel coating, needs no seasoning, works on induction, gas and electric and is oven safe to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. The listing says it is made with 50 percent recycled materials and backed by a lifetime warranty.

An oval suits a whole chicken or a long roast better than a round pot, though it sits less evenly on a round burner. The cast iron line is new, so there is no long record yet of how its enamel holds up.

The catch. Heavy at 8 quarts, and the enamel has years rather than decades of owner history.

Also 02More Le Creuset for less

Le Creuset

Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron Signature Deep Round Oven, 6.5 qt., White

A full quart larger than the 5.5 quart and usually well over $100 cheaper on Amazon.

The deep round oven is the same French enameled cast iron in a taller shape, with the same 500 degree oven rating, dishwasher rating and light interior. Its extra depth helps with stock, beans and deep frying and contains splatters.

The trade is a narrower base relative to its volume, so you brown in more batches. For a household that braises more than it sears, it is the better buy.

The catch. Less floor for browning than a wider pot of similar capacity.

Lodge limited lifetime, original owner

If the Caraway appeals mainly on price, consider this first. Lodge's 6 quart is enameled cast iron rated to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, dishwasher safe though hand washing is recommended, and America's Test Kitchen recommended it. It browns and braises far better than an aluminum pot.

Its enamel chips more readily than Le Creuset's, by owners' reports, and at nearly 13 pounds with the lid it is heavier than either pot in the main comparison.

The catch. The heaviest pot here, with less durable enamel than the French makers'.

More head to heads.

Every comparison

Enamel is not nonstick, and nonstick is not forever

Enameled cast iron is a glass coating fused to iron. It does not wear away with use, but food sticks to it without fat, and it can chip if the pot is knocked or shocked. Ceramic nonstick is a thin coating that releases food beautifully when new and gradually loses that release, faster with high heat, cooking sprays and abrasive scrubbing.

That is the whole comparison in two sentences. A Le Creuset bought now can be in use in fifty years. A ceramic nonstick pot is a pleasant tool for a few years.

What each is good at

Le Creuset: browning meat, long oven braises, no-knead bread, deep frying, anything that wants stored heat. Caraway: soups, pasta, rice, chili, oatmeal and reheating, where easy release and a light pot matter more than searing power.

Reading the warranties

Le Creuset's limited lifetime warranty excludes thermal shock, overheating and misuse. Caraway's warranty page gives one year from purchase for its products and excludes coating damage from high heat, metal utensils and abrasive cleaners, along with nonstick deterioration. Caraway's enameled cast iron listing on Amazon describes a lifetime warranty; check the terms with Caraway before relying on it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Caraway as good as Le Creuset?

Not for the same jobs. The Caraway Dutch oven is aluminum with a ceramic nonstick coating, built for gentle heat and easy cleanup. The Le Creuset is enameled cast iron, built for searing, braising and bread, and lasts far longer.

Is the Caraway Dutch oven cast iron?

The 6.5 quart Caraway Dutch oven most people mean is not. It is an aluminum pot with a ceramic nonstick coating. Caraway also sells a separate enameled cast iron line.

Can you bake bread in a Caraway Dutch oven?

Caraway rates it oven safe to 550 degrees Fahrenheit and lists bread baking among its uses. It holds less heat than cast iron, and repeated high heat is hard on any ceramic nonstick coating, so frequent bakers are better served by cast iron.

Which is lighter, Le Creuset or Caraway?

Caraway, by a wide margin. Caraway gives its 6.5 quart Dutch oven as about 6 pounds; America's Test Kitchen weighed the 5.5 quart Le Creuset at 11 pounds 3.5 ounces with its lid.

Is Le Creuset worth the extra money over Caraway?

If you will use it for decades, yes: the enamel does not wear out the way a nonstick coating does, and the warranty is lifetime rather than one year. If you mainly make soup and pasta and want a light pot, the Caraway costs far less.
