The cookware still made in America

A good deal of cookware sold as American is designed here and made elsewhere. The box carries a flag, the company is based in Ohio or New York, and the small print says China. That is legal as long as nobody says Made in USA, so the words on the listing matter more than the branding around them.

The Federal Trade Commission sets the bar. An unqualified Made in USA claim means the product is all or virtually all made here: final assembly, all significant processing, and nearly all of the parts. Anything short of that has to be qualified, as in "Made in USA with imported hardware" or "with global components." Those qualifiers are not a failing. They are the maker telling you exactly where the line falls, and we repeat them here word for word.

The five below are the pans we could confirm, from the Amazon listing and the maker's own site, are made in the United States. Two carry an unqualified claim. Three qualify it, and we say how. Brands that make one line here and the rest abroad are noted, because the logo alone does not tell you which you are holding.

How we chose

  1. Stated origin, not implied. Only pans whose listing or maker states US manufacture. A flag on the box or a US head office does not count.
  2. The exact wording. Where a maker qualifies the claim (imported hardware, global components or materials), we quote it rather than round it up.
  3. Worth owning anyway. Origin is not a reason on its own. Each pick also has to be good cookware at its price.
  4. Sold properly. Each is sold on Amazon by Amazon.com, the maker or the maker's distributor, not a third-party reseller.

We read makers’ specifications, warranties, care instructions and the sources listed at the end. We do not accept paid placements. How we choose

The 5 picks, in detail

Lodge Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Skillet, 12 Inches

Best overallNo. 1

Lodge Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Skillet, 12 Inches

Our take. The plainest, cheapest route to cookware made in America, and a very good skillet on its own terms.

Lodge has cast iron in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, since 1896 and runs two foundries there today. Its seasoned cast iron and carbon steel are made and seasoned in those foundries, and the listing says Made in the USA without qualification. For about $30, nothing else on this page comes close.

The 12 inch is the useful size: room for a chicken, a pan of cornbread or four steaks in two batches. It arrives seasoned with vegetable oil and gets better with use. It is heavy, the surface is pebbly rather than smooth, and it rewards a little patience.

One distinction worth knowing. Lodge's standard enameled cast iron is made in China. Only the separate USA Enamel line, below, is made in Tennessee. Check the product name before assuming a Lodge is American.

The catch. Heavy, with a rough cast surface; not the pan for anyone who struggles to lift a full skillet one-handed.

Heritage Steel Eater Series 12 Inch Frying Pan, 5-Ply Fully Clad Stainless Steel

The American stainless panNo. 2

Heritage Steel Eater Series 12 Inch Frying Pan, 5-Ply Fully Clad Stainless Steel

Our take. Five-ply clad stainless from a family factory in Tennessee, for less than the better-known name.

Heritage Steel is a family-owned maker in Clarksville, Tennessee, that has run its factory since 1983 and makes only clad stainless cookware. The Eater Series is its own line, made with the food site Eater.

The listing wording is precise and worth reading: fully made in the USA with global materials. The pans are made in Tennessee; some of the materials come from abroad. That is a qualified claim in the FTC's sense, and Heritage Steel states it openly.

The pan is 3.0 millimeter, five-ply construction clad to the rim, with no coating of any kind. It works on induction and carries a lifetime warranty. Buy it if you want stainless and would rather not pay the All-Clad premium. Skip it if you need a full matched set from one maker's store; the Eater range is smaller than the big lines.

The catch. Stainless takes practice: preheat properly or eggs and fish will stick.

All-Clad D3 Stainless Steel 12" Fry Pan, Made in the USA

The classic, with a qualified claimNo. 3

All-Clad D3 Stainless Steel 12" Fry Pan, Made in the USA

Our take. The pan most American kitchens think of first, bonded in Pennsylvania since 1971.

Construction

Care

All-Clad invented bonded tri-ply and has made it in western Pennsylvania since 1971. The D3 fry pan is the standard: stainless over an aluminum core, bonded all the way up the sides, oven and broiler safe to 600°F and happy on induction.

The listing says "Made in the USA with global components," and that phrasing is the whole story. The bonded body is made in Pennsylvania; some parts are sourced abroad. It is a qualified claim, stated plainly, and it is more than most cookware brands can say.

Be careful with the rest of the catalog. All-Clad's bonded stainless lines (D3, D5, Copper Core) come from Pennsylvania, while its nonstick, bakeware and appliances are made elsewhere. The logo is the same on both, so read the listing.

The catch. The narrow, channeled handle is not for everyone; try one if you can before buying a set.

Lodge USA Enamel 4.5 Quart Dutch Oven

The rare one: enamel made hereNo. 4

Lodge USA Enamel 4.5 Quart Dutch Oven

Our take. The only colored enameled cast iron Lodge makes in America, and nearly the only one anyone does.

Keeps for
Decades, with the usual enamel care
Capacity
4.5 qt
Weight
About 13.2 lb

Enameled cast iron is almost entirely a French, Chinese or Thai product. Lodge's USA Enamel line is the exception: cast and enameled in Tennessee. Lodge's own wording is "Proudly made in the USA with imported hardware," meaning the knob and handle fittings come from abroad.

The 4.5 quart weighs about 13.2 pounds, is rated to 500°F and works on induction. It is sized for a loaf of bread, a braise for four or a pot of beans. The line also runs to 3, 6 and 7 quarts, though stock by size and color comes and goes.

Do not confuse it with Lodge's regular enameled Dutch ovens, which cost far less and are made in China. The words USA Enamel in the product name are what you are paying for.

The catch. Fewer sizes and colors than the French makers, at a price closer to theirs than to Lodge's imported line.

Field Company No.10 Large Cast Iron Skillet, 11.6-Inch

If money is no objectNo. 5

Field Company No.10 Large Cast Iron Skillet, 11.6-Inch

Our take. Lighter, machine-smoothed cast iron in the old Griswold and Wagner manner, made in America start to finish.

Field Company

Field Company makes cast iron the way the prewar American foundries did: poured in green sand and machined smooth, so the pan is lighter and slicker than a modern Lodge. The No.10 weighs 6 pounds, noticeably less than a 12 inch Lodge.

Its listing makes the strongest claim on this page, "100% made in the USA," and adds "made in America from start to finish." It arrives with three coats of grapeseed oil seasoning and sells direct from Field Company on Amazon.

The cooking surface is 9 3/4 inches across, smaller than the rim suggests. Buy it if weight or a smooth surface matters to you. Skip it if the Lodge already does the job; it cooks the same food for seven times the money.

The catch. The price is for finish and weight, not for better food.

How to read the label

"Made in USA" with nothing after it should mean all or virtually all of the product is American. "Made in USA with imported parts" or "with global components" means the key manufacturing happens here but not every part does. "Assembled in USA" means foreign parts were put together here in a substantial way. "Designed in USA" says nothing about where it was made.

If a listing uses none of these phrases, assume the pan is imported. Makers who build here tend to say so.

Brands that split their lines

Lodge makes seasoned cast iron and carbon steel in Tennessee but its standard enamel in China. All-Clad bonds its stainless in Pennsylvania but sources nonstick and bakeware abroad. The brand tells you nothing on its own; the product name and listing do.

What we left out

Well-regarded American cast iron makers such as Smithey were not listed on Amazon by the maker when we checked, so they are not here. FINEX, made in Portland, Oregon, is sold on Amazon, but its listing does not state origin, and we list only what the listing or maker confirms for that exact item.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lodge cast iron made in the USA?

Lodge seasoned cast iron and carbon steel are made in South Pittsburg, Tennessee. Its standard enameled cast iron is made in China; only the USA Enamel line is made in Tennessee, with imported hardware.

Is All-Clad made in the USA?

The bonded stainless lines, including D3, are made in Pennsylvania, and the listing says "Made in the USA with global components." All-Clad's nonstick, bakeware and appliances are made abroad.

What does "with global components" mean?

It is a qualified Made in USA claim. The main manufacturing is done in the US, but some parts or materials come from other countries. The FTC requires that qualification when a product is not all or virtually all American.

Is any stainless steel cookware fully made in the USA?

Heritage Steel and All-Clad both clad and form their pans in the US, and both qualify the claim for imported materials or components.

What is the cheapest cookware made in the USA?

A Lodge cast iron skillet. The 12 inch is about $30 and the 10.25 inch less.
